The Prison Reform Trust published “This is me”: A Child Impact Assessment toolkit on the 9th December 2022. This resource supports children with a mother in the criminal justice system.
This toolkit follows Prison Reform Trust’s July 2018 briefing: ‘What about me? The impact on children when mothers are involved in the criminal justice system’. This report showcased the importance of using Child Impact Assessments. These assessments are essential to identify and address the needs of children with a mother in the criminal justice system.
The toolkit was co-created with children and young people with lived experience of having a mother in the criminal justice system. It provides practical guidance to practitioners working with children affected by maternal imprisonment. The toolkit aims to listen to the voices of these children to provide them with the guided support that they require.
The resource likewise urges a range of stakeholders to support children affected by maternal imprisonment. The children’s concerns urgently need to be listened to and addressed.
